Double trouble for Ashleys

DEJECTED: Cole (number three) and Young (number 11)

AFTER FAILING to convert penalties in the Euro 2012 quarter-final penalty shoot-out against Italy last night (June 24), two England footballers have allegedly been subjected to racial abuse on social network website Twitter.

The match ended 0-0 after extra-time and Italy claimed victory 4-2 on penalties at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine, following Ashley Young hitting the crossbar and Ashley Cole’s attempt being saved by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Following England’s exit, both Cole and Young were allegedly targeted for abuse by a user.

Police confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the alleged racial abuse.

“We are aware of alleged racist comments on Twitter following last night’s England game and have launched an investigation,” said a Metropolitan police spokesperson.

“The allegation was made to MPS on 25 June by a member of the public relating to comments on a Twitter account supposedly based in London.

“No arrests at this early stage.”
