Dream chasers Hamilton and Joshua on the brink

CHASING THEIR DREAMS: Joshua and Hamilton (right)

LEWIS HAMILTON and Anthony Joshua are within touching distance of fulfilling their respective dreams.

Hamilton’s win at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi on October 12 now sees him leading the world championship standings by 17 points with just three races to go.

A fourth win in a row and a ninth of the season in Sochi makes the Stevenage-born driver favourite to land the world crown come November.

Hamilton, 29, also tied Nigel Mansell’s British record for 31 Grand Prix wins and on that achievement, said: “It’s not one that you think about too much, I focus on the championship, but it’s incredible.

“I never thought that I’d have [as many wins]. Eight years [in F1] has gone by so quick.”

Meanwhile Joshua is within touching distance of fighting for the British heavyweight title.

Olympic champion Joshua, 24, continued his knockout sequence and claimed the WBC International heavyweight title with a second-round stoppage of Denis Bakhtov on October 11 and faces another domestic rival, 39-year-old Michael Sprott, next month.

Should, as expected, Joshua dismantle Sprott, then a bout against David Price is an option with domestic, European and world honours in the offing.
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who opened the door for the bout to take place, added: “Joshua against Price next year is a big big fight. David's a great fighter but this is something very special.

“We're going to have a lot of fun with Anthony Joshua. He's going to put boxing and Britain on the map all over the world.”

Hamilton will next be in action at the US Grand Prix, which takes place between October 31 and November 2.
