East London man named as Malia stabbing victim

VICTIM: Tyrell Matthews-Burton died after being stabbed in Greece

A MAN stabbed to death in a bar fight on the Greek island of Crete has been named.

Tyrell Matthews-Burton, 19, from Leyton, east London, was on holiday in the resort of Malia when he became involved in a brawl with up to 30 British tourists.

The violence happened in the early hours of Tuesday (July 23) morning, according to Greek witness statements taken by police.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing Matthews-Burton – 17 other UK holidaymakers were detained by police.

“We are aware of the arrests of a number of British nationals. We are in touch with the local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance”, a Foreign Office spokesman said.

The Mirror reported Harry Nye, 18, from Kent, witnessed the violence and its bloody aftermath.

He told the paper: “We saw one guy having his head stamped on and this other lad just fell straight.

“Me and my mates ran to the guy on the floor and someone was doing CPR but he needed pressure on the wound so we tried to help. I’ve never seen that much blood.

“The paramedics took ages to get there and the police were stood around like, ‘It’s just another Brit’. They couldn’t have cared less.”

Malia has recently become one the most popular destinations in the region for young British tourists – the Foreign Office estimates about two million people travel annually from the UK travel to Greece.
