Ellen Pompeo calls out magazine for lack of diversity

SPEAKING UP: Ellen Pompeo

GREY’S ANATOMY actress Ellen Pompeo has always been a champion for diversity - and now the starlet has taken it one step further by calling out Caucasian people for not being ‘better allies’.

During an on-camera interview with Net-A-Porter, the actress was accompanied by Gabrielle Union, Gina Rodriguez and Emma Roberts for a discussion based around television and representation on and off the screen.

During the discussion, Pompeo called out the lack of diversity on set of the interview saying she did not see enough colour on set.

“This day has been incredible, and there’s a ton of women in the room. But I don’t see enough color,” Pompeo said about the Net-A-Porter set. “I didn’t see enough color when I walked in the room today.”

“I had a meeting with a director of another endorsement project that I’m doing where I said, ‘You know, when I show up on set, I would like to see the crew look like the world that I walk around in everyday,'” the actress continued. “I think it’s up to all productions to make sure that your crew looks like the world we see.

“As Caucasian people, it’s our job. It’s our task. It’s our responsibility to make sure we speak up in every single room we walk into [and say] this is not ok and that we can all do better. It’s our job. We’ve created the problem.”

People on social media have praised the television star for her comments.

Political strategist Atimi Omara tweeted: “I have nothing else to add to this but yes Ellen Pompeo showing and telling how fellow white people can be allies in the fight for racial justice,” while host Ariana Datil wrote: “How does one give a standing ovation on Twitter? I need to do that right now. @EllenPompeo you are SO on point.”
