Family’s hope for Usain

FAMILY REUNION: Maureen Davis (left) and Jennifer Bolt

IT’S good to know wherever you are in the world that there’s always family not too far away – and for Usain Bolt while he’s in Birmingham he has a cousin only half an hour away.

Maureen Davis is his mum Jennifer’s first cousin and she lives in Wolverhampton with her husband Bob and two sons.

Davis has not seen her famous relative since she went home to Jamaica for a family reunion a couple of years ago, but she’s in touch with everyone regularly by phone.

Three years ago Jennifer came to stay with her in Wolverhampton and they caught up on old times.

Sadly, Davis and her family have not managed to get tickets for the 100 metres final, but she is going to one of the heats, so she hopes to meet up with family again then.

“This is a tough time for Usain and as much as I would love to see him privately now he’s in Birmingham I don’t want to add to the pressure,” said Maureen, who attended an Olympic service at Birmingham Cathedral in honour of the athletes on Saturday (July 21).

She had hoped to see Usain there in the congregation, but he stayed away to continue training at the University of Birmingham where the Jamaican track and field team have their pre-Olympic base.

Davis visited the camp before they arrived and it all had her seal of approval.

She said: “I think the green, leafy campus is just right for Usain because it will remind him of home when he looks out of the window and sees all this greenery. He will appreciate all that. And she also had some tips for sous-chef Wayne Willis when she popped into to see him working away in the kitchen.

She added: “As a family we are all so proud of Usain. He’s under immense pressure but I know he will deliver. We are keeping everything crossed for him.”
