AN EAST Londoner is using her passion for fashion to help raise awareness and money for the "unknown" condition.

The first Creative Arts Event and Fashion show in aid of Angelman Syndrome takes place next week on Sunday 31 in Hackney.

This event is produced by Hackney resident Joanna Marcella, who is also the founder of the FDC Young Designer Awards.

Money raised at the event will be donated to ASSERT, the Angelman Syndrome Support Education & Research Trust.

Angelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and causes severe physical and intellectual disability. Those with Angelman Syndrome will typically have profound special needs, some physical disability, a significant lack of verbal skills, sleep disturbance and epilepsy as well as other possible complications.

For years, Irish actor Collin Farrell has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the condition after one of his sons was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome.

Event organiser, Marcella said: “I’m encouraged by [actor] Colin Farrell’s mission to raise more awareness about Angelman Syndrome. As a celebrity he is able to catch the attention of the media with the story of his own son."

"I to am extremely passionate about this cause and want to do all I can to raise awareness for angels like my grandson”.

She added: "As a designer and the relative of a little 'angel' I, and other members of the fashion and creative industries can use this showcase to raise funds for the research, which will lead to treatments and eventually a cure.”

During the evening, there will be a host of creative industry performers and artists taking part. There will also be a fashion show with designs from Francesca Phipps, Leonora Asomanin, Alexandra Ziedina and Jerry Grocravla of TRUE Soldier.
