Female clergy on the rise in America

CLERGY: Female clergy numbers have risen over the decades

A RECENTLY PUBLISHED report entitled State of Clergywomen in the US 2018: A Statistical Update discovered that there has been a rise in the number of female clergy in seven mainline denominations.

The report by Eileen R Campbell-Reed, an associate professor of practical theology at the Nashville, Tennessee, campus of the Central Baptist Theological Seminary found that female clergy numbers have risen over the decades – increasing from 2.8 per cent in 1977 to 32 per cent in 2017.

Other traditions saw similar increases over this same time: Unitarian Universalists (30 per cent to 57 per cent), United Church of Christ (25 per cent to 50 per cent), Free Methodist (1 per cent to 20 per cent), Church of God in Christ (10 per cent to 25 per cent), Church of the Brethren (12 per cent to 26 per cent) and Assemblies of God (8 per cent to 23 per cent).
