Five low maintenance fancy dress ideas for this weekend

BLACK PANTHER: Costumes based on characters from the blockbuster film have been a popular choice this year (Image: Marcus Scribner/Instagram)

HALLOWEEN MAY be over but the weekend is just beginning, and with it, the post-Halloween fancy dress parties. If you’re heading to a compulsory costume event over the next few days, here are some ideas for last minute fancy dress outfits based on looks from some of our favourite celebrities.

Missy Elliot in The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) video
This year, Missy Elliot went as herself in the iconic The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) circa 1997. And we're here for it. To get the look, grab a shiny black puffer coat or get creative with black bags. Robotic moves required.

Black Panther
It’s no surprise that Black Panther was a popular choice for fancy dress costumes this past Halloween. But if you haven’t got a ready made Nakia costume and if all the Black Panther masks are sold out, make a nod to black history month with a literal take on the theme, like singer and Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland.

This look can easily be made up using items that are already in your wardrobe. Simply wear your hair in a fro or don a black beret and wear head-to-toe black. If you’re feeling crafty, make some protest signs to complete the look.

Black Panther (the record-breaking blockbuster)
For those of you, who have a little extra time on your hands or already purchased a black panther mask after the hype surrounding the film earlier this year, the fictional Black Panther offers a whole host of great options. Style your hair in bantu knots for Nakia, wear all black and the mask for T'Challa, wrap up in some seasonal fur for M'Baku – essentially, take your pick. Michael B Jordan as Erik Killmonger prior to his trip to Wakanda is one of the films most low maintenance costume ideas as illustrated by Black-ish star Marcus Scribner. Just throw on a denim jacket, a white t-shirt and some specs and you're good to go.

Willy Wonka
Earlier this year there was speculation that Janelle Monáe might be cast as one of Roald Dahl’s most famous characters, Willy Wonka. The singer and actress has stoked the rumours with her choice of fancy dress this year. Monáe teased fans by sharing her Willy Wonka Halloween costume on Instagram.

This is actually pretty easy to replicate if you have a velvet coat and top hat. (Ok, they might be a little harder to get your hands on last minute unless you have a slightly eclectic wardrobe or know someone who has.) But grab you can recreate the look with a bow tie, a cane, plenty of sweets (chocolate bars and golden tickets are essential).

Shower Puff
Move over power puff girls (although, that’s not a bad low maintenance costume idea) and make room for the shower puff girl. Teyana Taylor dressed her daughter Junie as a shower puff and it is the cutest costume you’ll see this year. Grab a load of mesh or tulle and some string and you’re pretty much set to go. Because of the amount of materials needed to give this look the volume it needs, it probably works better as a kid’s costume, but hey, we won’t judge if you want to try it as an adult.
