Floella Benjamin guest edits Big Issue Windrush edition

WINDRUSH DAY: Baroness Floella Benjamin

BARONESS FLOELLA Benjamin has guest edited a special Windrush edition of the Big Issue.

The 56-page edition of the magazine highlights Caribbean pioneers who changed Britain with articles on everything from fashion and food to sport and entertainment.

Linford Christie, Sir Lenny Henry, Ainsley Harriot and historian Mike Phillips have all contributed to the issue.

Benjamin said: “I am honoured to be the guest editor of The Big Issue to highlight the story of the Windrush Generation and to give hope to future generations. We are on the threshold of the very first official Windrush Day and I am so thrilled and happy to have reached this milestone in British history.”

The author, entertainer and businesswoman, is “very much part of the Windrush Generation”, having arrived in the UK from Trinidad aged 10.

Benjamin had campaigned for years for a Windrush Day to be established but her proposals were rejected on the basis that we already had Black History Month.

Last year the government announced an annual national Windrush Day on June 22, the first of which will take place this Saturday. It also made £500,000 available to community groups and local authorities seeking to mark the day with celebratory, educational and commemorative events and activities.

“Caribbeans came here to help rebuild Britain, including working in the newly created NHS. So for those who had to overcome so much adversity, it has great significance,” Benjamin wrote in The Big Issue.

In addition to successfully campaigning for the creation of the first annual Windrush Day, as part of the Windrush Commemoration Committee, Benjamin has been instrumental in organising a permanent tribute to the Windrush Generation.

Benjamin said: “The prime minister, Theresa May, asked me to chair a Windrush Commemoration Committee, to create a permanent and significant monument as a legacy to the Windrush Generation.

“On the first official Windrush Day I will be announcing where it will be located.”

The special Windrush edition of the Big Issue is available to purchase until Sunday.
