Flu prevents Mo Farah from competing

DROP OUT: Farah has pulled out of the Great Edinburgh XCountry event due to illness (PA)

BRITISH OLYMPIC hero Mo Farah’s New Year has started with disappointment after distance runner revealed a bout of the flu has resulted in him dropping out of his first competitive engagement of 2015.

The 31-year-old had been scheduled to run in the Great Great Edinburgh XCountry event that takes place this weekend (Jan 10).

Farah, who was due to compete as part of Team GB and Northern Ireland, said: “Unfortunately I have to cancel my participation... as I had the flu over the Christmas and New Year period and had to take some days off training.”

Looking ahead to what else lies in store for the next 12 months, the 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic and World champion added: “My main goal for 2015 is the IAAF World T&F Championships in Beijing and I will keep training hard to defend my 5,000m and 10,000m titles.”
