Global outrage after black man shot multiple times by police

FATALLY SHOT: Alton Sterling

GRAPHIC FOOTAGE showing the moment a 37-year-old black man was shot dead by police for selling CDs outside a shop in Baton Rogue, Louisiana, has surfaced online and caused widespread outrage.

Alton Sterling was shot in the chest and the back multiple times after officers caught him selling CDs in front of the Triple S Food Mart in the East Baton Rouge Parish at around 12.35am on Tuesday (July 5), the Coroner’s Office told WAFB-TV.

Baton Rouge police remained tight-lipped after the incident between two police officers and Alton Sterling, the man who was fatally shot during the altercation.

One witness described the police officers as aggressive and said that Sterling was armed, but did not reach for his pockets and was not holding a weapon during the incident, The Advocate reports.

On Tuesday night about 150 protesters took to the streets of Baton Rouge chanting “Black Lives Matter” and “No justice, no peace”.

The protest continued past midnight and demonstrators said they would hold a rally outside city hall on today morning (July 6).

“We’ve seen a video that’s disturbing, and gruesome,” Mike McClanahan, Baton Rouge president of the NAACP, who was among the protesters for much of the evening, told the Advocate. “We know that justice must be served.”
