Gyan receives top Ghana gong

GHANA AND Sunderland footballer Asamoah Gyan was named Ghanaian Sports Personality of the Year at the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) at the Banquet Hall, Accra recently.

The 25-year-old striker edged out Black Star team-mate Richard Kingson and bantamweight boxing world champion Joseph Agbeko.

At last year’s World Cup in South Africa, Gyan scored three goals and led his team to the quarter-finals where they narrowly lost on penalties to Uruguay.

After an impressive display in the World Cup Gyan was signed by Sunderland from French side Rennes for a club record of £13 million.

Gyan - whose international record consists of 23 goals in 46 games including an equaliser against England in March at Wembley - repaid the Black Cats by scoring 11 goals in his debut season in the Premier League.
