Holness to be new JLP leader and PM

NEW ROLE: Education minister Andrew Holness announced as Jamaica's new Prime Minister

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has announced Education minister Andrew Holness as the next party leader and Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Information minister Darly Vaz made the announcement moments ago (Oct 5) at a press conference held at the Terra Nova All Suite Hotel in St Andrew.

The 39-year-old was a firm favourite from the onset, although investment and trade minister, Christopher Tufton, was considered to be his strongest competitor.

The race for the JLP's leader follows Prime Minister Bruce Golding's decision to step down four years into a five-year in term government, citing a loss of personal credibility to push through necessary reforms.

Golding was weakened by his handling of America's request for the extradition of confessed drug runner, Christopher Coke, who operated from the prime minister's West Kingston constituency.
