Hornets set to buzz at Wembley

HERO: Deeney after his winning goal

WATFORD LEGEND Luther Blissett believes that his beloved club can make a return to the Premier League after their sensational Championship play-off semi-final success against Leicester City on May 12.

Troy Deeney scored Watford’s winner in an extraordinary finish to their play-off semi-final triumph. Twenty seconds after Anthony Knockaert had a debatable penalty saved at the other end, Deeney thumped in the decisive goal to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

Now Blissett, who helped the Hertfordshire club win promotion from the Fourth Division to the First Division while scoring 186 goals in over 500 appearances in the Eighties and Nineties, feels that the glory days are just around the corner as they face a Wembley date against Crystal Palace on May 27.

The former goal poacher told the Voice of Sport: “They can definitely go on and win it now. It is on the cards for them to go on and finish the job.”
Blissett, who scored a hat-trick on his England debut in 1982, was keen to pay tribute to Deeney.

“When he first came to club he played in wider positions and he didn’t do too bad a job.

OPTIMISTIC: Former Watford striker Blissett

“The light bulb sometimes goes on with players and they recognise that they have a great opportunity if they get their head down and work hard.

“I think that Troy’s done that - he’s worked very hard. And he’s been the leader of the frontline and has enabled us to get where we are.

“We missed him in the first leg of the play-off [which Watford lost 1-0] but him coming back in the second leg just galvanised things.

“I’m hoping that they can replicate the team that I played in.

“This time I’m hoping that with the owners that we have, and them wanting to be involved for the long haul, that if we can get to the Premier League that we can stay there without putting the club in jeopardy.”
