GOLDEN BOY: South London-born actor Idris Elba has been nominated for a Golden Globe award

IDRIS ELBA has further cemented his star status in the US after receiving a Golden Globe nomination, it was revealed today (Dec 15).

The Hackney-born actor, who migrated to America in 2000, was recognised for his performance in the popular BBC 1 drama series, Luther, which is currently shown on BBC America.

The 38-year-old was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the rouge detective in the gritty drama, but lost out to actor Al Pacino for his role in You Don't Know Jack.

Fans of Elba, who also starred in the popular American series The Wire, were shocked when the actor failed to secure any nominations for the show.

The 69th annual Golden Globe awards ceremony will take place on January 15.
