Issa Rae fears ‘difficult black woman' label

PICTURED: Issa Rae

ISSA RAE is on top of her game right now.

Following the success of her HBO show Insecure and film roles in The Hate U Give and Little, the 34-year-old is continuing to climb new heights in Hollywood.

However, the Senegalese American actress revealed that she sometimes has to change her language in order to not be labelled as mean or difficult.

Speaking at a Beautycon panel discussing ‘Black Girl Magic on the Big Screen,’ Rae said: “I have to sugarcoat because I know that the environment I’m in will label me as the angry or difficult black woman.

“It is frustrating, at times, to feel like you have to constantly work on how you’re going to present something, so you are able to work again in the future.

During the panel, Rae talked about her excitement on starring in Little alongside fellow black actresses Regina Hall and Marsai Martin.

“I love working with vocal black women … opinionated black women,” she said. “I understand it’s not coming from a place of disrespectful bullying. It’s coming from a place of ‘I know what I want.’ And there’s nothing more refreshing than that.”

Martin is a body-swap comedy, centered on Jordan [Regina Hall], a take-no-prisoners tech mogul who torments her long-suffering assistant, April [Issa Rae] and the rest of her employees on a daily basis.

She soon faces an unexpected threat to her personal life and career when she magically transforms into a 13-year-old version of herself [Marsai] right before a career-changing presentation.
