IT Crowd star makes media powerlist

GEEK CHIC: Richard Ayoade in his role as Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd

ONLY one black professional has made a list of media power players published by The Guardian newspaper.

Actor Richard Ayoade, best known from his role as Maurice Moss in Channel 4 show The IT Crowd, was number 94 in the annual list.

The 34-year-old comedian has now turned his hand to both writing and directing in the upcoming film Submarine.

Ayoade, who also starred in The Mighty Boosh and Nathan Barley, described the making of the Film 4 coming-of-age drama as "like trying to tell a joke by recording one word a day into a Dictaphone out of order and reassembling it and hoping the cadence of it works".

The Cambridge graduate, born to a Norwegian mother and Nigerian father, won the 2001 Perrier award at the Edinburgh fringe festival in 2001 for the spoof horror show Garth Marenghi's Netherhead which he co-wrote and co-starred in.

Describing why he was selected, judges said in The Guardian: “Ayoade makes the list on his own merit, but is also representative of a new wave of film-makers bypassing the traditional route to movie-making.”

Other people on the list include Rupert Murdoch, James Murdoch, Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre, Simon Cowell, Julian Assange and even My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.
