Jamaican Olympic medallists headline track meet in June

TWO JAMAICAN London 2012 Olympic Games medallists have been confirmed to be in action at a track meet in Canada on June 29.

Sprinters Yohan Blake and Veronica Campbell-Brown will headline the Edmonton International Track Classic, organisers announced yesterday (April 22).

World 100m champion Blake will be returning to the event for a second straight year, but for Campbell-Brown it will be her first appearance at a track-and-field meet in Canada.

"I am very happy to be coming back to Edmonton and am looking forward to breaking the 10-second barrier in front of some of the best fans in the world," said Blake, who is nicknamed ‘The Beast’.

Blake won the 100m final last year in Edmonton with a time of 10.05 seconds.

Blake, who won double Olympic Games sprint silver medals last year, is currently nursing a hamstring injury, sustained during the UTech Classic two weeks ago at the National Stadium in Jamaica.

He will miss at least three meets, starting with the Jamaica Invitational set for May 4, the Doha Diamond League on May 10 and the Shanghai Diamond League on May 18, but is expected to be healthy for the Jamaican Trials, set for June 19-23.

Campbell-Brown will make her Canadian debut at the event, the third of five stops in the 2013 National Track League series.
