JAY-Z gets lawyer to help 21 Savage in immigration battle

INTERVENTION: JAY-Z has appointed his lawyer to help free 21 Savage

JAY-Z has appointed his lawyer to help 21 Savage resolve his immigration battle and described his detention as an “absolute travesty”.

The 26-year-old rapper was detained by immigration enforcement officers for reportedly living in the US under an expired visa.

In a statement on his Facebook page, JAY-Z wrote: “The arrest and detention of 21 Savage is an absolute travesty, his U Visa petition has been pending for four years. In addition to being a successful recording artist, 21 deserves to be reunited with his children immediately, #Free21Savage.”

Alex Spiro, who handles JAY-Z’s legal affairs told Variety: “We are not going to stop until he is released, bonded out or in front of a judge.”

He added: “What we have here is someone who overstayed their visa with an application pending for four years – not a convicted criminal that needs to be detained and removed but, by all accounts a wonderful person, father, and entertainer who has a marijuana offense which was vacated and sealed.”

21 Savage, whose real name is She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is the father of three children who are all US citizens.

Last weekend, ICE, who apprehended the rapper, revealed that the rapper was a British national and had moved to the US as a child.

His legal team say he moved to the country aged seven but immigration officials argue he was aged 12.

"The continued detention of Mr Abraham-Joseph serves no other purpose than to unnecessarily punish him and try to intimidate him into giving up his right to flight to remain in the United States," 21 Savage’s lawyer told BuzzFeed News in a statement.

He added: “Mr Abraham Joseph has US citizen children that he supports and is eligible for relief from deportation. We and he will fight for his release, for his family, and his right to remain in our country. No one would expect less from him.”
