Jennifer Hudson: 'My fiancé saved my life'

TRAGEDY: Singer Jennifer Hudson's family was murdered in 2008

JENNIFER HUDSON says that a last-minute decision to fly and visit her fiancé may have saved her life.

The Spotlight singer has revealed that accepting an invitation to see her wrestler hubby David Otunga Jr fight in Florida meant that she was not at home when her mother, brother and nephew were killed by her sister's estranged husband William Balfour in a vicious attack.

"I flew out to see him, that's why I'm still here, that's one of the things that saved my life," Hudson told Ebony magazine.

"Because I could have been home with my mum then, [but] he wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago," she added.

The 30-year-old's mother Darnell Donerson and brother Jason were shot at the family home in Chicago and Julian, the Oscar winner's seven-year-old nephew, was found dead in the back of an SUV three days later. He had also been shot.

The candid interview is the first time the singer, who guards her private life ferociously, has spoken publicly on the tragedy, telling the magazine: ''I've never said that before, and I can't believe I just said that now".

Balfour, who has been jailed since his arrest in December 2008, faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion. His case will be heard in February 2012.
