Jermain Defoe becomes a Black Cat

NEW CAT IN TOWN: Jermain Defoe (PA)

GOALPOACHER JERMAIN Defoe has finalised his move to Sunderland.

The 32-year-old joins the Black Cats on a reported three-year deal after MLS side Toronto FC agreed to the deal.

In a part-exchange agreement, Sunderland have let Jozy Altidore, 25, move in the other direction.

There was much speculation about where Defoe would end up after several Premier League clubs, including Queens Park Rangers and Hull, expressed interest in signing the hitman, who was made available after Toronto decided to cut their losses on a player they signed for £6.5m in 2014.

Speaking before all the paperwork was completed, Defoe told The Mirror: “I felt so sharp (in his medical). All that hard work has paid off. I can't wait to start scoring goals for Sunderland.

“Everybody knows how much I love English football and I still feel that I have a lot to offer. People might look at my age, but I have always looked after myself and I hope I can show that with my performances.”
