Jess Ennis-Hill gets rape abuse on Twitter

OUT SPOKEN: Ennis-Hill wins gold at the London 2012 Games (PA)

JESSICA ENNIS-HILL’S decision to publicly discourage Sheffield United from resigning convicted rapist Ched Evans has led to a Twitter user saying they hope the athlete is raped by the footballer.

The 28-year-old Olympic heptathlon champion yesterday (Nov 13) said she wanted her name taken off the Jessica Ennis Stand at United’s ground Bramwell Lane if the club opted to hand Evans, 25, a new playing deal after he was released from prison.

Police are investigating the social media activity made soon after Ennis-Hill spoke out and it read: “I hope he [Evans] rapes her”.

In a statement, South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are making efforts to contact the individual concerned, but have launched an investigation into the posts online.”

Evans served half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in 2011.

He is back training with the Blades, sparking a petition calling on the club to not employ him but United boss Nigel Clough no decision has yet been made.

In her original statement encouraging Sheffield to not re-hire Evans, Ennis-Hill said: “Those in positions of influence should respect the role they play in young people's lives and set a good example.

“If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs.”

Evan, who was convicted of rape in 2012, maintains he did not rape the woman and that the sex was consensual.
