Jess Ennis-Hill makes Ched Evans ultimatum

THREAT: Evans, left, and Ennis-Hill (PA)

GOLDEN GIRL Jessica Ennis-Hill has expressed her dismay at the prospect of Sheffield United offering convicted rapist Ched Evans a new contract at the club and threatened to cut off ties with her local team.

The Blades are facing a national outcry after allowing the 25-year-old forward to train with them since he was released from prison, having served half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room.

Ennis-Hill, 28, has a stand at Bramwell Lane named after her following her success at the London 2012 Games where she won gold in the heptathlon.

Despite Blades manager Nigel Clough saying he has not decided if he will offer Evans a fresh deal after the club sacked him when he was convicted in 2012, Ennis-Hill spoke out against the ambiguity.

The Sheffield-born track star said: “Those in positions of influence should respect the role they play in young people's lives and set a good example.

“If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs.”

Nearly 160,000 people have signed an online petition calling on United to not give Evans a contract.

Evans, who was jailed in April 2012, maintains he did not rape the woman but at his trial admitted having sex with her, claiming the May 2011 encounter was consensual.
