Kanye West opens up about living with bipolar disorder

MENTAL HEALTH: Kanye West has discussed the stigma around bipolar disorder in a new interview

KANYE WEST has spoken out about living with bipolar disorder and the stigma that surrounds it in a new interview with David Letterman.

West appears on the second series of Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, which is available to stream from Friday, May 31.

The rapper, who revealed he was diagnosed with the condition two years ago, opened up about his personal experience, including an incident that made headlines in 2016 when he was restrained.

"They have this moment where they put you, they handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed, and they separate you from everyone you know," CNN reported he said. "That's something that I am so happy that I experienced myself so I can start by changing that moment."

"You have this moment [where] you feel everyone wants to kill you. You pretty much don't trust anyone," he said, detailing what it feels like to experience mental health problems as a result of bipolar disorder.

The 41-year-old also spoke about managing mental health with medication.

"If you don't take medication every day to keep you at a certain state, you have a potential to ramp up and it can take you to a point where you can even end up in the hospital. And you start acting erratic, as TMZ would put it, he added, referring to the media coverage of the incident.

The rapper also speaks about his mother, Donda, who died in November 2007 following complications from cosmetic surgery.

“This would have been the funnest [sic] time of her life to have those kids running around that house and being able to like go and buy them toys,” he told Letterman.

He went on to say: “But you know, she’s here with us and she’s guiding us.”

West’s mother died before any of his children with Kim Kardashian – North, five, Saint, three, Chicago, 16 months, and newborn Psalm – were born.

In the episode, West also gives Letterman a style makeover, dressing him in items from his collection.

Lewis Hamilton and Tiffany Haddish also appear in the new series.
