Karl Lagerfeld and his muses of colour

THE PASSING of one of fashion’s biggest designers has rocked the world.

Karl Lagerfeld, known for being the creative directors for both Chanel and Fendi, passed away at the age of 85 after being unwell for several weeks.

With a career spanning decades, the German icon has set trends through his designs, photography and so much more as he cemented himself as legendary maestro of fashion.

To celebrate his life and work, we’ve listed below some of the designer’s muses of colour:

Willow Smith

The daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith was announced as a Chanel ambassadors in 2016, and fronted a campaign for the fashion house’s eyewear collection. Taking to Instagram to celebrate her campaign in 2016, Smith thanked Lagerfeld and the Chanel team, writing: “Thank you Karl Lagerfeld and the entire team at Chanel for expanding the perceptions of “beauty” by picking me to be the new Chanel ambassador. I am honored.”

Alek Wek

British-Sudanese model Alek Wek, became the first black model to close a Chanel Haute Couture show in 2004.

Adut Akech

The most recent of Lagerfeld’s muses, rising Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech Bior became the second-ever black model to close a Chanel Haute Couture show, after being handpicked by the designer in 2018. The 18-year-old model said in an emotional Instagram post after the show that “no words can express' her pride” and told her followers: “This one's for the dreamers.”

After opening the last Chanel cruise show, I honestly didn’t think it could get any better but I was wrong because I just closed this one. Alton Mason

Alton Mason became the first black male model to take part in a Chanel runway show in the brand's 109-year history. He was among models walking the the French fashion house's Métiers d'Art show.

Adwoa Aboah

British-Ghanaian model and activist Adwoa Aboah has starred in a series of campaigns and shows for both Chanel and Fendi, with Lagerfeld at the helm. She signed on as the face of Chanel’s eyewear campaign in 2018, and fronted Fendi’s fall/winter 2018 campaign alongside Gigi and Bella Hadid.

Pharrell Williams

A fashion icon in his own right, Pharrell has designed a collection for Chanel, walked in their pre-fall 2019 show and starred in multiple campaigns for the Parisian fashion brand - including becoming the first man to model Chanel handbags in a campaign.

Joan Smalls

Puerto-Rican model Joan Smalls is one of the most celebrated high fashion models in the game, modelling for an array of brands including Chanel and Fendi. She has continuously walked in shows for both fashion houses, and starred in Fendi’s fall/winter 2012 campaign and Chanel’s spring/summer campaign.
