Larenz Tate hints at Love Jones sequel

CULT CLASSIC: Larenz Tate and Nia Long as Darius Lovehall and Nina Mosely in Love Jones

ACTOR LARENZ Tate has hinted that he and Nia Long are to reprise their roles for a sequel to 1992 hit film Love Jones.

The 38-year-old actor, who played poet Darius Lovehall in the cult classic, said they had both been "in talks" to do a sequel to the romantic drama.

Love Jones is a great thing to do, if we can catch lightening in a bottle… it happened with The Best Man,” he told The Grio.

“I think if we found the right take on the story and the script was right, it would be nice to do. It’s been something that Nia and I have been approached about and we’ve been talking about trying to do. We’ll see what happens.”

Love Jones, which was Theodore Witcher's directorial debut, followed the lives of Lovehall and Nina Mosley (Nia Long), a gifted photographer who has recently lost her job.

A mutual attraction is sparked between them, spurred on by their joint love of poetry.

IN TALKS: Actor Laurenz Tate

At the time, The producers of the film said that they wanted to make a modern film about African-American life that did not use violence and recreational drugs as elements in the story.

Film critic Roger Ebert awarded the film 3 out of 4 stars, and expressed the view that "There is also a bow to the unconventional in the ending of his film. Many love stories contrive to get their characters together at the end. This one contrives, not to keep them apart, but to bring them to a bittersweet awareness that is above simple love. Some audience members would probably prefer a romantic embrace in the sunset, as the music swells. But Love Jones is too smart for that."

He also noted: "It's hard to believe that Tate - so smooth, literate and attractive here - played the savage killer O-Dog in Menace II Society. Nia Long was Brandi, one of the girl friends, in Boyz N the Hood. Love Jones extends their range, to put it mildly".

The film also starred big names including, Isaiah Washington, Bill Bellamy, and Lisa Nicole Carson. None have commented on rumours of a sequel
