LeBron James assisted Octavia Spencer in fight for fair pay

ASSIST: LeBron James helped Octavia Spencer achieve equal pay in their Netflix series Madam C.J. Walker

LEBRON JAMES helped Octavia Spencer secure fair pay for her role in their upcoming Netflix series.

The Oscar-winning actress revealed the basketball player’s welcome intervention during a panel at this year’s Sundance film festival.

Spencer, will star as the title role in Madam C.J. Walker, a limited Netflix series chronicling the life of the first African-American self-made millionaire. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, was a philanthropist and entrepreneur. She made her fortune by making and selling black hair care and skincare products.

The series is being executively produced by James.

“I have to say, when I was negotiating my deal for Madam C.J LeBron James had to intervene,” IndieWire reported Spencer said at the event.

“So we need all our male counterparts to be in the fight with us.”

Spencer said the only way for the gender pay gap in entertainment to be tackled is if open discussions are had.

EQUAL PAY: Octavia Spencer has had to fight to be paid the same as her co-stars

“The only way to do it is to have these conversations, to talk numbers with your co-stars,” Spencer said.

It’s a method that she has reaped the benefits of before.

In 2018, Spencer’s negotiations for equal pay made headlines when it was revealed that Jessica Chastain, her co-star in an currently untitled film, supported her to ensure they earned the same.

Chastain was only made aware of Spencer’s reduced pay because they had talked about the figures.

Speaking of Chastain’s promise last year, Spencer said: "She said: 'You and I are going to be tied together. We're going to be favoured nations and we're going to make the same thing, you are going to make that amount'. Fast forward to last week, we're making five times what we asked for."
