TIME TO REFLECT: A new year is the perfect opportunity to take a step back and make changes

A NEW Year provides opportunities to put the past behind, have a fresh start, pursue new goals and achieve one’s

Soul Stirrings shares some insights that will help you to have a productive, purposeful and faith-filled 2018 and help you develop the strength and fortitude to help you overcome whatever obstacles you might encounter on your journey through life.

Fear God

Having a belief in God, the creator of the Universe, will empower, motivate and inspire you. The Bible says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and showing reverence to God is a reminder that He is more powerful, stronger and wiser than humans and that we can rely on him to take us through life’s difficulties as well as bless us continually.

Love God – and yourself

The Bible states that the greatest commandment is to love God with all one’s heart, mind and soul, and love one’s neighbour as you do yourself. Show your love to God by doing what his word says and keeping his commandments.

Demonstrate love to yourself by constantly reminding yourself that you are created in the image of God and fearfully and wonderfully made and think the same of your neighbour.

Pray constantly

Prayer is communion with God. Praying regularly will enable you to draw close to God, hear from Him and get insight, wisdom and direction for your life.

Plus, you’ll also be able to offload your concerns and burdens and become a better person as the Holy Spirit brings to
the fore aspects of your character that need to be changed, so that you can become more Christ-like.

Have faith

In order to undertake any project, goal or initiative, you must believe that God has your back and that you have the necessary qualities to succeed. Faith in God should give you the confidence to overcome obstacles, take hold of opportunities and embrace life.

Set goals

Having goals to aim for – whether it’s getting a job, a promotion, learning a new skill, setting up a business, finding a
life partner. Finding a solution to poverty helps to give life meaning and direction. So set yourself goals and ask God for strength to achieve them.

Increase your spiritual strength

Life can often consist of a series of challenges and difficulties that have to be overcome. Having a winning attitude,
fortitude and resilience can help you do so, and these attributes can be developed through prayer alongside reading
and meditating on God’s word, the Bible.

In this life, people will do you wrong, treat you badly, misuse you, or sometimes even abuse you. In order to prevent a build up of anger, resentment and bitterness, it is important to forgive for both your physical and mental wellbeing.

Furthermore, God reminds us that if we don’t forgive others, He will not forgive us.

Be relational

Having good relationships and a vibrant social network makes life worth living. Be committed to building meaningful friendships with others. Treat others well and it is likely you will get treated well in return. To make friends, be a friend.

Be generous

There is a blessing to be had when you give of your time, money and wisdom to others. Scripture states with the measure you give, it will be measured back to you. And remember, God loves a cheerful giver.

Travel the world

Visiting different places and countries is a great way to broaden your horizons, meet new people and experience personal growth.

Your health is your wealth

As you go about your life, remember to look after your health. You need a fit body to fulfil your life’s purpose and
live out your dreams and aspirations. Eat well and exercise regularly, even if it’s just walking, and make sure you visit the doctors and get your health checks when necessary.

Show gratitude

Be grateful for life. You’ve made it through to another year – that is worth celebrating, because there are many who did not. And seeing as you’re still alive aim to make 2018 your best year yet. And with God’s help, it will be.
