Live review: Chris Tucker at the Hammersmith Apollo

Quick wit: Chris Tucker

IT'S been two decades since Chris Tucker first came to prominence, performing on Russell Simmons' famed show Def Comedy Jam.

Today, the US funnyman is older and wiser, but his on-stage energy and wit remain as sharp as ever.

An animated live performer, Tucker's energy combined with his trademark high-pitched voice had the audience of London's Hammersmith Apollo roaring with laughter as he shared a host of comedic tales.

From his frustration with long-winded church services (“Preacher says ‘make sure you come back tonight’, I'm like, ‘look outside, it IS tonight!’”); to his annoyance at McDonald's drive through staff (“Why I gotta drive to the next window to get my food? YOU go get my food!”), the Rush Hour star was in fine form as fired out his material.

Clearly unafraid to make himself the butt of the joke, he made comedy of his issues with the IRS (it was reported in 2011 that he owed over $11 million in taxes), joking: "Everybody wants me to do another Friday – help me out with my taxes!"

However, he later shared his reservations about taking part in a sequel to the 1995 film in which he starred alongside hip-hop star Ice Cube: "Cube didn't pay us for the last Friday – he just gave us CDs and some weed!"

With the show making up part of Tucker's debut UK tour, here's hoping it will be the first of many more to come.
