Liverpool sign PSG’s Mamadou Sakho

NEW BUY: Mamadou Sakho (PA)

BRENDAN RODGERS’ Liverpool have signed two new central defenders on the final day of the transfer window – Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori.

Frenchman Sakho, 23, joins from Paris St-Germain for a fee understood to be around £18m, while the Portuguese Ilori, 20, cost a reported £7m from Sporting Lisbon.

Sakho, who has won 14 caps for France, told Liverpool’s official website: “I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me.

“I'm really looking forward to playing my first game.”

He is the club’s most expensive signing over the summer, and the two new recruits mean Rodgers has brought in a total of seven players since the window opened.

The ex-PSG player can play centre-back or at full-back, and Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre said of Sakho: “He's an important marquee signing for us.

“It was a difficult one to do and it was a difficult one for us to get, but I'm very pleased that we've been able to attract him to the football club.”

Rodgers has prioritised defensive acquisitions, has so far his work is paying off with Liverpool winning their opening three Premier League games with clean sheets and single Daniel Sturridge goal coming in each – the latest over bitter rivals Manchester United yesterday at Anfield.

Liverpool also signed Chelsea's Victor Moses for a season-long loan that sees the west London club get £1m.
