Londoner recycles leather goods to make cool accessories

LEATHER EXPERT: Chanelle Antoinette

AN EAST Londoner who works with vulnerable adults has turned her passion for vintage fashion into a business.

Hackney-raised Chanelle Antoinette, a self-taught craft enthusiast, has started selling her own recycled leather goods.

Antoinette comes from a social care background and has spent the past five years facilitating creative workshops as part of Adult Learners’ Festival, passing on her craft skills to local residents of Hackney.

"Coming from a social care background I have developed a passion for working with vulnerable adults experiencing or overcoming challenging situations, wanting to offer some solution especially in these days of austerity," she explained on her blog.

"Specifically I wanted to provide a creative outlet where local residence could find a release and not focus on their issues or misfortunes."

A while back Antoinette, 35, was given a load of leather as payment for a workshop last year and quickly went about learning how to make items with it.

She started creating purses, wallets and bags out of the recycled leather and now sells them at a stall at Portobello Market.
