Maggie Alphonsi gets England recall

RECALL: Alphonsi (PA)

VETERAN FORWARD Maggie Alphonsi has been recalled for England women’s Six Nations squad that faces Ireland in their next game.

The 30-year-old flanker, who has earned 67 caps for her country, is one of seven changes the national side has made for Saturday’s (Feb 22) game against the Irish at Twickenham.

Rochelle Clark, Emma Croker, Sophie Hemming, Katherine Merchant, Natasha Hunt and Kay Wilson have also been called up.

England head coach Gary Street said: “The quality of our bench shows the squad depth we have.

“This is obviously a big game. With our defeat last season to Ireland, playing at Twickenham and knowing we must win, this is a big match.

“Ireland have a strong all-round game with some powerful forwards and pace in their backs but we've learnt a lot from our 18-6 defeat to France [on Feb 1] and we are feeling ready for this.”
