Man, 27, guilty of double Mayfair rape

A MAN has been convicted of raping two women on two separate occasions after they were out in Mayfair, central London.

Fabio Moniz, 27, of no fixed address, was found guilty of two counts of rape at Snaresbrook Crown Court today – he was also successfully charged with attempted assault by penetration.

He raped his first victim on the evening of August 25, 2012, after spotting her with a friend during a night in the trendy district of the capital.

Moniz bought both women drinks, and the victim could then only remember waking up in an unknown flat to find him raping her. She and her friend left the premises and contacted the police.

The second victim was sexually abused soon after on September 13 when he befriended her on a Mayfair street and then bought her multiple drinks.

Like the first victim, she awoke to find herself in bed with Moniz, but this time in a hotel room. She was on business in the UK from America, and when she flew back to the US she alerted authorities that she believed she had been raped.

The Met coordinated with American counterparts to collect evidence of the crime.

“Moniz preyed on young women in London’s West End, using initially his charm, and then alcohol as a means to sexually assault them”, detective superintendent Kate Halpin said.

“I would like to commend the victims for the courage they have shown in reporting the offences and re-living their ordeals in court to see justice.

“With the support of specially trained officers and other specialist agencies they have seen this case through to conviction.”

She added: “Given the nature of Moniz’s crimes, it is highly likely he has committed further offences and I would urge any victims to come forward.”

He will be sentenced on September 20.
