Man arrested by armed police at Parliament

INTRUSION: Armed police following the incident at the Palace of Westminster

A MAN has been detained by armed police at the Houses of Parliament on suspicion of trespassing.

Armed officers pinned the man to the ground by Carriage Gates inside the Palace of Westminster.

Witnesses at the scene said the man jumped over the railings before he was tasered.

The police, who are continuing to investigate the situation, have confirmed that he was shot with a taser.

After the incident, Parliament was placed under lockdown but the increased security measure has now been lifted.

Christopher Hope, chief political correspondent at The Telegraph, was at Parliament at the time.

He told the BBC: "I heard a scream and then looked out the window, and then about half a dozen police officers who appeared not to be armed were running towards a man.

"And then it appears the man was tasered.

"It appears to be contained now. There are armed police patrolling downstairs by the Christmas tree."
