MEMORIAL: MLK statue opens in October

THE 30-FOOT statue of Martin Luther King Jnr will open to the public on October 16 it was announced today (Sept 12).

A massive 250, 000 people were reportedly expected to visit the $120 million memorial in Washington on its original Aug 28 opening, which also marked the 48th anniversary of King’s famous I Have a Dream speech, but the date was pushed back after Hurricane Irene hit the east coast of America.

President Barack Obama is belived to be scheduled to speak at the dedication on its new date, which will also be the 16th anniversary of the Million Man March which was held on the National Mall in 1995.

Earlier this month (Sep 1) poet and author Maya Angelou blasted the quote etched into memorial, claiming it made King sound like an “arrogant twit”.

The famous writer says the inscription, taken from a sermon King gave where he imagined what his own eulogy would say, made the civil rights activist seem “egotistical” because it was taken out of context.
