Meghan Markle cookbook shortlisted for prestigious award

SUCCESS: Meghan Markle at the Hubb Community Kitchen

A COOKBOOK launched by Meghan Markle in support of Grenfell Tower residents has been shortlisted for the André Simon Food & Drink Book Awards, The Bookseller reports.

Together: Our Community Cookbook was published earlier this year after the Duchess of Sussex worked alongside a group of women from the Hubb Community Kitchen to launched the 50-recipe book created in the aftermath of the Grenfell Fire.

The Duchess came up with the idea for the cookbook after learning that the Hubb Community Kitchen was only open two days a week due to a lack of funding. In September at Kensington Palace, Meghan described the project as a "tremendous labor of love,” and wrote the foreword for this passion project.

She wrote: "I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together.“ Describing her first visit to the kitchen she wrote: "An apron was quickly wrapped around me, I pushed up my sleeves, and I found myself washing the rice for lunch."

Together: Our Community Cookbook has seen tremendous success, reaching number one on the Amazon book chart and has appeared in the Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller lists - and now it could potentially be an award-winning publication, as it competes alongside a 15-strong shortlist.

This year, the André Simon Food & Drink Book Awards celebrates its 40th anniversary, and every year, the awards recognises the best books centered around food and drinks.

Chair of the André Simon Memorial Fund Nicholas Lander said: “This has been a bumper year for the André Simon awards. The shortlist features established food and drink figures, including Diana Henry and Oz Clarke, alongside first-time authors Ben Lebus and James and Tom Morton.

“The diverse publications range from a portrait of a pie and mash restaurant in East London to an exquisitely photographed homage to the world’s finest teas. This reflects a vibrant and dynamic food and drink book industry which our awards have been celebrating for 40 years. The shortlist provides fantastic ideas for Christmas stockings, having been whittled down from 150 strong entries.”

The André Simon Food & Drink Book Awards will take place at the Goring Hotel in London on February 5 2019.
