Meghan Markle praised as an “inspiration” to young people

COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY-General Patricia Scotland has praised the Duchess of Sussex for being an “inspiration” for young people.

Baroness Scotland made the comments during an interview with Press Association to mark the family of nations’ 70th anniversary.

The modern Commonwealth was formed when Britain, Ceylon, Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Canada and New Zealand signed the Declaration of London exactly 70 years ago on april 26, 1949.

During the interview, Baroness Scotland said the duchess was a “vibrant, professisional, woman” who was dedicating herself to public service.

She added that the former actress is “a great example,” and that her mixed race heritage made her relatable to the masses.

“Our Commonwealth is very, very mixed but as someone said to me lots of people are getting very excited about the fact the duchess is mixed race," said Baroness Scotland.

She added: “I think the fact they are a young, committed couple, that they are both sharing such a deep interest in young people and in issues of learning and development, has been an inspiration for many of those young people – and they love to see them.”

Meghan is patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and vice president of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT), while Harry is the QCT’s president and the Commonwealth’s Youth Ambassador.

With 60% of Commonwealth citizens aged 29 or under, the royal couple are a hit with the younger and diverse audience.
