Men charged with $65m heist to face court

THE TRIAL of the five men, charged in connection with the theft of $65 million from security guards transporting money to banks, is to start in May.

Oral Chin, André Malcolm, Corriann Collins, Courtney Getten and Vernon Elliott are all due to appear at Jamaica’s Gun Court charged with robbery with aggravation during the incident in February last year.

It was also revealed that both Chin and Malcolm were employed to the security company that was robbed.

It has been alleged that employees from the security company were transporting money to the banks on February 3, 2010, when a car bumped into their vehicle. The security guards came out of the vehicle to assess the damage when armed men alighted from the other car and robbed them.

A report was made to the police and intensive investigations led to the arrest of the five men.
The Crown is alleging that Chin was the mastermind behind the robbery.

Chin and Getten are currently on bail.

Lawyers representing the other men applied for bail yesterday but Supreme Court judge Leighton Pusey turned down their applications.
