Michelle Obama shares advice for Meghan Markle

WORDS OF WISDOM: Michelle Obama has shared her advice for Meghan Markle

MICHELLE OBAMA knows a thing or two about handling life in the public eye and using her platform to affect positive change, so it’s fitting that she has some advice for Meghan Markle.

Obama shared her words of encouragement for the Duchess of Sussex in an interview with Good Housekeeping.

“Like me, Meghan probably never dreamt that she’d have a life like this, and the pressure you feel – from yourself and from others – can sometimes feel like a lot,” Obama told Good Housekeeping.

She added: “So my biggest piece of advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything. I spent the first few months in the White House mainly worrying about my daughters, making sure they were off to a good start at school and making new friends before I launched into any more ambitious work. I think it’s okay – it’s good, even – to do that.”

The former US first lady, who is currently on tour promoting her memoir, Becoming, also highlighted how a role like Markle’s can be a force for good.

“What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that – and I think Meghan can maximise her impact for others, as well her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally,” she said.

Obama, who is due to speak at the Southbank Centre this evening as part of her book tour, is looked up to by many young women but she says she also finds them a source of inspiration.

“In many ways, things are harder for young women today. But what’s inspiring to me is that so many of the young women I’ve met are triumphing in incredible ways. Unlike my generation, they’re not as held back by the societal belief that girls and boys can’t do the same thing,” she said.

Yesterday Obama announced that she would be cancelling her book tour dates in Paris and Berlin in order to attend the funeral of former US president George HW Bush.

She wrote on Twitter: “It’s important to me to join the Bush family in celebrating President George H.W. Bush’s exemplary life. This will unfortunately preclude my visits to Paris and Berlin. I’ve been deeply touched by the enthusiasm for my memoir, and I’m working to reschedule my trip for next year.”
