Murder appeal a decade on

KILLED: Darren Sherman

A DECADE after the murder of a man in east London detectives are launching a fresh appeal for help in tracing a man they wish to question.

Officers investigating the death of 22-year-old Darren Sherman hope "allegiances may have changed over the last ten years" and that people will feel able to come forward with information on the whereabouts of 30-year-old Ibrahim Bangura, who they wish to speak to in connection with the stabbing in 2003.

A reward of £20,000 remains on offer to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the murder.

Darren, a carpet fitter, was discovered on Manchester Road in the Isle of Dogs with a number of stab wounds following an altercation involving a group of males on March 7, 2003. He died shortly after arriving at hospital.

It is believed that Darren had become involved in an altercation with two black men close to his home at Alice Shepherd House, Manchester Road, which led to him being stabbed.

No weapon has ever been recovered and officers retain an open mind about the motive behind Darren's murder.

Bangura last lived in Mellish Street on the Isle of Dogs. He was described as black, about 5ft 10ins and of proportionate build with a short black skin-head haircut. It is believed he left the UK shortly after the incident before later returning. His current movements and whereabouts are unclear.

APPEAL: Police are keen to trace 30-year-old Ibrahim Bangura

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Dermott Carroll, said: "It's ten years since Darren's murder but my team remains committed to finding those responsible and holding them to account for their actions.

"A decade is a long time and I hope people who know what happened that night or have information about Ibrahim Bangura may now, with the passage of time, feel more confident about coming forward and speaking to us in confidence."

Darren's mother Rosemarie Belle said: "It's been ten years since Darren was taken from us. If anyone has any information, please come forward. I need to know what happened to my son.

"Darren came from a loving family and had his whole life ahead of him. We don't know the circumstances of his death but someone must know something."

Rosemarie added that many friends of both her son and Ibrahim Bangura were now in their 30s with children of their own and she hoped this might prompt them to think about how they would feel if this had happened to their son or daughter.

Anyone who can assist should contact the incident room on 020 8345 3985; if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

Four men were originally arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the murder. Proceedings were later discontinued against all four.
