Naomi Campbell on Kerry Washington cover: It happened to me

WHITEWASH: Supermodel Naomi Campbell has commented on actress Kerry Washington's recent InStyle magazine cover

BRITISH SUPERMODEL Naomi Campbell has weighed in on the Kerry Washington InStyle cover scandal, admitting that she has had similar experiences.

During an online interview with The Huffington Post, Campbell wouldn't say for certain if she thinks that InStyle magazine consciously lightened Scandal star Kerry Washington's skin in her recent cover, but she did reveal that she's posed for magazines and had similar outcomes.

"That happened to me," Campbell said.

After Washington shared a snap of the cover last week, the magazine was accused of "whitewashing" the actress' appearance with a lighter skin complexion and thinner lips.

As talk turned to outrage, InStyle quickly issued a statement denying it altered Washington’s skin tone, blaming it instead on “lighting.”

“While we did not digitally lighten Kerry’s skin tone, our cover lighting has likely contributed to this concern,” the magazine explained in a statement.

“We understand that this has resulted in disappointment and hurt. We are listening, and the feedback has been valuable. We are committed to ensuring that this experience has a positive influence on the ways in which we present all women going forward,” they added.

Campbell commented: "It could be the lighting. I don't know for a fact, I wasn't there. But we know what Kerry looks like week after week, so why would they do that to us? We're not stupid, so it has to be a faux pas somewhere."
