'Nearly 60 officers disciplined over race related incidents'

STATISTICS: 'Nearly 60 officers disciplined over race related incidents'

NEARLY SIXTY police officers from Bedfordshire Police have faced disciplinary action for race related incidents since 1999, reports Befordtoday.

Statistics obtained through a Freedom of Information request by the website, allegedly revealed that reports ranged from sending 'offensive text messages' to 'making racist comments during an incident while off duty'.

The report also outlined that in one case 10 sergeants and a chief inspector had to be reprimanded over an email which may have been interpreted as racist in nature.

A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police told Befordtoday: “We take any report of racism involving our officers extremely seriously and will fully investigate claims.”

He continued: “Out of the 57 claims, which is a relatively small number, 51 of those related to an email that was circulated several years ago."

“Anyone who received that email and failed to take appropriate action was dealt with by way of disciplinary action," he added.

The last recorded incident was reportedly resolved in July 2009.
