Netflix announces first original African animated series

SUPER GIRLS: Mama K's Team 4 save the day in their own fun and crazy way, says the show's creator, Malenga Mulendema

NETFLIX HAS picked up its first original African animated programme, a series entitled Mama K’s Team 4.

The animation tells the story of four teenage girls living in a neo-futuristic Lusaka, Zambia.

The quartet are recruited by a retired secret agent who is still committed to saving the world.

Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema, creator of Maka K’s Team, was inspired to develop the series after she failed to see heroes that resembled her in cartoons or lived in a world that was similar to her own.

“In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero,” she said.

In 2015, Mulendema, was one of eight winners in the Triggerfish Story Lab initiative, a pan-African talent search. Triggerfish Animation Studios and CAKE, a leading London-based kids’ entertainment company, are producing the series.

The visuals, designed by Cameroonian artists Malcolm Wope, draw inspiration from retro 90s R&B and hip hop girl groups.

Melissa Cobb, vice president of original animation at Netflix, said: “Mama K's Team 4 has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on-screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to.”

As part of Nextflix’s collaboration with Triggerfish and CAKE, the streaming service has launched a pan-African search for female writers to join the series’ creative team.

"In addition to giving African writers a global platform on which to be heard, we are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga's incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix,” Cobb said.
