New chapter for soul food sisters

BOOK RELEASE: Sisters Michelle and Suzanne Rousseau

SISTERS MICHELLE, 44 and Suzanne Rousseau, 42 are co-authors of the new, visually captivating, recipe book Caribbean Potluck: Modern Recipes from Our Family Kitchen.

Described as Caribbean food with a twist, the book accentuates the sisters love for food through the telling of their family history and uses sensational photography to highlight not only the beauty of the Caribbean, but also the creative recipes they invented using standard and easily accessible Caribbean ingredients.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica to hotelier Peter Rousseau and his wife Beverley, the siblings have been self titled ‘foodies’ from a very young age.

“Our mother was always cooking these delicious meals and our father, a foodie as well, often took us to very fancy places to eat” they recall.

They have also been influenced by their mixed ethnic background which comprises of German, British, Indian, Cuban, African, French, Haitian and Scottish and have incorporated these diverse cooking styles in their book. This makes for a unique experience that is a far cry from typical Caribbean cookbooks.

The sisters spent four years in Trinidad as children and have included a few of the local recipes including their specialised version of Trinidadian Chicken and Rice (Pelau). Other unusual delicacies include Jerk Chicken Lasagna and Guyanese Pepperpot.

The ladies, who are hosts and producers of popular television and web series, Two Sisters and a Meal, attended Hillel Academy in Jamaica before moving to Canada for University where Michelle studied Spanish and Suzanne studied English.

They then returned to Kingston and opened a successful restaurant called Ciao Bella, which helped them realise the food business was their calling. They later attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, in order to enhance their abilities.

Having catered to many glamorous events, their client list includes Prince Charles, ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, The President of China, Office of the Prime Minister, British High Commission, US High Commission and many others.

With elegant recipes that are easy to put together, such as Red Stripe BBQ Pan Chicken and Sweet Potato Gratin, a book like Caribbean Potluck has never been written before. It is a must have for every food lover, regardless of their ancestry.

Michelle and Suzanne have been in the UK since late August promoting the book and have been guests on TV channels, including OH TV, showing off their culinary skills.
