Nigeria’s women’s football team receives cash boost

NIGERIA’S WOMEN’S football team has received funding from two of Africa’s wealthiest businessmen, BBC Sport reports.

Aliko Dangote and Abdulsamad Rabiu, have pledged a sum of US$207,000 to the football squad for winning the Women's Africa Cup of Nations last weekend after they beat South Africa 4-3 on penalties in the final.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons beat South African Banyana Banyana squad on penalties after a scoreless 120 minutes to retain their women Africa Cup of Nations title in Accra, making this their third consecutive win and ninth overall for the Nigerian girls.


According to several reports, the Super Falcons are set to meet President Muhammad Buhari.

A statement on the president’s official Twitter account congratulated the team on their efforts following the win. It read: “Congratulations to the Super Falcons on their AWCON18 victory over the Banyana Banyana of South Africa tonight. First they qualified for the World Cup in France next year, then tonight added the icing on the cake: winning AWCON for the 3rd consecutive time, and 9th time overall."

Several fans also shared their happiness at the Super Falcons win. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala tweeted: "Congratulations and thanks to our great women, Super Falcons of Nigeria, for a hard fought victory! Let’s move on to greater heights."
