The Nineties: still kicking it

KINGS OF R&B: Jodeci recently headlined a sold-out gig at the Wembley Arena

NO MATTER how far we move away from the nineties, fashion, music and style borne out of the famous era keep creeping back into the present day.

Nineties crooners Jodeci recently headlined a sold-out gig at the Wembley Arena and Dr Marten boots - granted they’ve had a facelift and a few fluorescent colours added to the line - are the footwear of choice for cool kids in and around London town.

The nineties, albeit over a decade ago, still occupies a special place in the hearts of many and for media entrepreneur Akosua Annobil has sparked a new business idea.

Just Kick It - 90s RnB Party, a monthly event, is a celebration of the feelgood genre and for those who enjoyed raves and house parties in the early-mid 90s.

“Just Kick It came to mind two years ago after throwing a party to celebrate my 30th birthday, which mainly featured classic 90s music. The feedback from my peers was exceptional, and highlighted a generation of mature, fun-loving authentic R&B lovers who are not being catered for on the clubbing scene,” Akosua told The Voice.

The event’s name and ethos derives from American R&B group Xscape’s first single, Just Kickin It, which was co-written by Jermaine Dupri and recorded in 1992.

Shoreditch favourite Charlie Wright's will host the night, which kicks off on July 13 and is targeted specifically at over 25s who may have grown up listening to classic R&B and hip-hop via their parents, older siblings or peers.

“Over 2,300 people have joined our Classic R&B page on Facebook and more recently we’ve seen the emergence of 90s throwback concerts, featuring the likes of Blackstreet, Jodeci, SWV, Keith Sweat and Horace Brown,” she said.

“I feel this summer is the perfect time to launch Just Kick It, and welcome those who want to reminisce, sing and dance in a friendly, care-free environment,” she added.
