THE NOTTINGHAM Trent University and College Union have released a statement following the racist incident which took place on their campus.

The statement says: "NTU UCU and UNISON Branches utterly condemn all instances of hate crime and actively campaign for equality at the university. We believe the strongest penalties possible should be applied to those found guilty of such offences.

"We are very concerned about the fact that it took 36 hours for the university to be alerted to the problem. We think the university should urgently revisit the decision to contract out the management of student accommodation.

"Outsourcing doesn’t work. Taking the management of student accommodation back in house would enable NTU to tackle any future occurrences of hate crime at the earliest opportunity bringing a speedy resolution in the best interests of victims.

"The general case against outsourcing is growing stronger all the time. UCU and UNISON believe it has a detrimental effect on staff and therefore on quality. It is risky, entailing hidden costs. The potential cost savings have been wildly exaggerated. As such it represents an unacceptable gamble with the reputation of colleges and universities and the safety of students.

Both unions are committed in assisting the university in making sure this kind of incident does not happen again."

A Nottingham Trent University student's video of fellow students shouting racist chants outside her room went viral earlier this week.

Rufaro Chisango shared the footage on Twitter with the caption: "yoo I’m fuming, the way people in the same uni halls as me are chanting 'we hate the blacks' outside my bedroom door. Words cannot describe how sad this makes me feel, in this 2018 people think this is still acceptable."

In the video, male students can be heard shouting: "We hate the blacks."

Since the video went public, two men have been arrested and Chisango has received an outpour of support.
