Police appeal renewed one year on from murder in Hackney

MURDERED: Alex Vanderpuye was stabbed in December 2017

THE POLICE are appealing for information in relation to the murder of a young man who was murdered in east London a year ago today.

Alex Vanderpuye was stabbed on a busy road in Hackney on Thursday December 7 2017.

He was discovered on Christie Road by police after the incident was reported but died at the scene.

Detective inspector John Marriott, from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are now twelve months into our enquiries and are still very keen to hear from anyone who has information, or any witnesses who might have seen something.

"This attack took place at a time when lots of people would have been around - Hackney is a busy, vibrant borough. We know that some of Alex's friends were with him at the time and we are also directly appealing to them to ask them to come forward as we believe they have vital information.

"We are also looking for anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the vicinity of Christie Road at the junction with Cassland Road from around the 16:30hrs on that day - Thursday 7 December.

"Alex left behind his father and an older brother and they deserve justice."

The police’s investigations have led them to believe that a group of men were responsible for the attack.

The suspects are understood to have arrived at the scene of the crime in a metallic green Mercedes, a vehicle which was later recovered by the police.

Last December, three men were arrested on suspicion of murder. They have since been released under investigation. An additional five men were also arrested and released under investigation.

When he was 15 years old, Vanderpuye was jailed for six for his part in the rape of a 14-year-old girl.

Abraham Badru, 26, who gave evidence against the gang of boys charged with the crime, was shot dead in March.

BRAVE: Abraham Badru

Badru won an award for bravery after he intervened and stopped the attack.

His mother, Ronke, has said she believes the motive for his murder was revenge.

On November 22, an 18-year-old woman was arrested in connection with Badru's murder. She has been released under investigation.

A £20,000 reward remains on offer for anyone with information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Badru's murder.

Witnesses and anyone with information about Alex Vanderpuye’s murder are being asked to contact the police on 0208 345 3715. Those with information about Abraham Badru's murder can contact the police on 020 8785 8099.

Alternatively, individuals can contact the Met on Twitter @MetCC or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
