Professor Tariq Modood contributes in local Bristol debate

DISCUSSION: The Great Debate Tour

ON WEDNESDAY 1st November, hosted by the University of Bristol (in partnership with University of the West of England, Bristol) saw this week’s Great Debate Tour. The panellists on the night consisted of Kwasi Tandoh, Yasmin Warsame and Tariq Modood.

Elevation Network's Great Debate Tour is the largest UK debate forum which targets black, minority and ethnic (BAME) students in UK Universities.

Kwasi Tandoh tweeted “Going to be speaking on a BHM panel tonight, the biggest debate tour in the UK! GDT 2017.”

The event began with an introduction led by Chairman Shanade Johnson. The first question of the night was whether we should have a Black History Month.

Each panellist member gave their intake and overview of the following question. The audience also discussed this topic, alongside the issue of how ethnic Britain differentiates from previous years to now.

The second topic of the night was the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire. For this sensitive subject, students and panellists looked at what lessons could be learned from the incident. The final topic centred on BAME representation in modern day Britain.

Tariq Modood said at the event: “Thank you, I enjoyed it and good to see so many young black students in Bristol positive about navigating the future and supporting others”

The Great Debate Tour covers 15 dates at universities across the country, running throughout Black History Month. For more information about the Great Debate Tour please visit:
