Quarter-final K.O for Watson

STRUGGLE: Watson

HEATHER WATSON’S US Indoor Championship quest was dealt a huge blow after she was knocked out of the quarter-finals by Stefanie Voegele 6-1 6-2 on Thursday (February 22), in Memphis, Tennessee.

After enduring spells of intensity against Galina Voskoboeva and Andrea Hlavackova earlier in the week, it was evident that the British number one seed was struggling to match her opponent who came into the competition ranked 48 places below her.

The 22-year-old managed to win her first two matches by three sets, but it wasn’t to be against the Swiss Voegele, who dominated from start to finish.

Watson, ranked 41 in the world, toiled throughout the course of the match and struggled continuously on her second serve only managing a depressing two points from 11.

It took 53 minutes for Voegele to secure victory.

The result means she will go on to meet New Zealander Marina Erakovic in the semi-finals.
